SEE YOU AT THE GATE! – Taking the Field (Reading Time: 5 min.)

FOR THE BOA VETERANS: Welcome back! This serves merely as a REMINDER of the procedure to get the band on the field. You may want to give this a short review.

FOR OUR NEWEST BOA PARTICIPANTS: We are glad you are here! It is TRULY worth your time to give this a careful reading.
If you have questions about this, please let us know!

THE SEQUENCE:

  1. SEE YOU AT THE GATE
The band comes to the gate/tunnel per the prelims schedule. Remember that there are no band guides.
    * Be prepared to explain your set-up procedure to the BOA Staff at the gate once you get there. This will get everyone “on the same page.” If there are any potential problems, we can get them handled right away.
  2. GOAL LINE
Just prior to the pre-set time, we’ll pull the band out to the GOAL LINE. Make certain you know which end of the field is the “Band Entrance” gate… If for some reason you can only enter from the opposite end of the field, the time to get the band to the other end IS part of your 4-minutes… so it’s best to make certain you can enter from the designated “Band Entrance” gate. That information will be included in your BOA final packet.
BOA staff will be with you for the countdown, so you know EXACTLY when the 4 minutes begin.
  3. TAKE THE FIELD
4-minutes prior to your official show time, we’ll take the band onto the field (in whatever fashion you have rehearsed). At this time, you can enter the field as you wish, including drum taps, music (pre-show), or whatever you choose. You may also do a short warm-up anytime during the 4-minutes. All set-up MUST happen within this time frame; that includes any/all props and staging.
*IF YOU HAVE PROPS: You will want to rehearse this “getting on the field” procedure with your prop-movers so that performance day is smooth. DO NOT rely on any additional time (prior to the 4-minute set-up) for the movement or assembly of any staging/props.
*FRONT ENSEMBLE: There will be a BOA official with your FRONT ENSEMBLE. They will coordinate their entrance with me.
  4. ANNOUNCEMENT
At 3 minutes and 15 seconds into the pre-set time (of the total 4-minutes) the ANNOUNCEMENT will begin.
If you choose, BOA Staff can stay with your drum major(s) to let them know when the announcement is coming and when to do the salute, but this is not required.
*BE ADVISED (and please share with your drum majors) – The BANDS OF AMERICA announcement does NOT ask, “Is your band ready?” Unlike many other events, this is NOT part of the BOA procedure.
  5. PERFORM YOUR SHOW
Once the announcement is complete, you can begin the show. Every adult (including directors and staff) must be off the performance field at that time.
  6. CLEAR THE FIELD
When the show is completed you have 2 minutes to clear the field (goal line) to the designated exit. Again, this includes ALL PROPS, ALL PERSONNEL, ALL PARENTS.

It really is a very simple process. Problems occur when people are not prepared or become overly anxious about the timing…resulting in parents, drum majors, and staff members confusing the band members with multiple instructions. It is critical we make this as easy and comfortable as possible for the students so they can focus their thoughts on their important performance responsibilities. You will receive 100% support in accomplishing this goal!
