Name: Gavin Verandes
Hometown: El Dorado Hills, CA
Why did you apply to be a member of the Honor Band?
I wanted to take my ability to play music to the next level, and I wanted the opportunity to play with amazing musicians from around the country.
What part of the trip are you most excited about?
Going to Indianapolis with the Rose Parade drumline and performing in the Grand National Championships.
What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in your high school music program?
I’ve learned that there is much more to music than just the notes on the paper. I’ve learned that the time commitment you have to put it is way more than just scheduled rehearsals. I’ve also learned that being a good drummer is about where you don’t play fills, rather than where you do.
To date, what is your favorite memory of being involved in your high school band program?
My favorite memory is definitely the marching band reviews and competitions. Waking up early and spending a full long day pushing yourself to be as best as you can during your performance.
What activities and clubs are you involved in?
Other than the marching band, I am involved the school jazz program as the drummer, and I also write and perform music outside of school.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to go to a university to study music and business while also being involved in marching band and other form of music.
Have you participated in any Music for All or Bands of America activities before? If so, which ones?
This is my first honor band.
Tell us something unique about yourself.
I have been playing live music semiprofessionally for 5+ years, even performing a pregame set at a Sacramento Kings game.
