Music for All’s Bands of America Honor Band will march in The Rose Parade on New Year’s Day 2022 in Pasadena, California. With more than 300 members, this national honor band will represent school band programs across America. Meet the members!

Name: Olivia Pentoney

Why did you apply to be a member of the Honor Band?

I really wanted to spin with some amazing people and stretch my color guard knowledge. For most of my life I have sat wondering if I was good enough, never reaching out to see if I actually was. Color guard is something that I really love so one day I just decided to go for it and here I am!

What part of the trip are you most excited about?

I can not wait to get to California and meet all of my fellow guard members and person and really get to know them!

What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in your high school music program?

  1. An entire programs worth of plastic chairs can fit into one practice room if you try hard enough.
  2. When you are up against a challenge be it mental, physical, or even just a really hard skill, stop, find a door way or a crack in the ground, take a breath, leave everything on one side and step through with a clear mind.
  3. Nothing that is worth it comes easily.

To date, what is your favorite memory of being involved in your high school band program?

On our way to Grand Nationals, one of our amazing parents tried to play us a movie to pass the long bus ride. They were able to connect the video but not the sound, so the entire bus of mostly guard and saxophone members sat there watching Shrek while reciting the entire script.

What activities and clubs are you involved in?

I am a member of the marching band in the fall as part of the color guard and I do winter guard during the winter season.

What are your post-graduation plans?

So far I have nothing concrete but I dream of acting and stunt acting. I am open to learning anything I can from anyone who will offer wisdom.

Have you participated in any Music for All or Bands of America activities before? If so, which ones?

I have preformed at Grand Nationals in Lucas Oil stadium with my school’s marching band.
