Behind any successful music program are supportive parents. This Mother’s Day, we highlight an amazing music mom: Karen Boone.

Karen is an administrator at Clovis Unified School District and her daughter, Emma Boone, was a participant in Bands of America Grand Nationals, 2017 Bands of America Honor Band in the Tournament of Roses Parade ® , WGI, DCI, and was a drum major with the UCLA Bruin Marching Band. Now, Emma is a high school band  director.

Karen has seen her daughter through every season of life and band. With tears in her eyes, Karen explained that the overall band community and the amazing people in it have been one of the best parts of being a band mom. These relationships have enriched her and Emma’s life tenfold. Just a few weeks ago, she had a reunion dinner with several of the parents who went to Grand National finals years ago. Even though their kids are grown up and no longer in high school, their bond remains strong.

Now that Emma is a band director, Karen and her husband are able to support their daughter in a unique way: as parents of course, but more importantly, as band parents. Her husband helps Emma with props and Karen acts a sounding board for logistical event questions. Karen’s favorite part about being a band mom is seeing her daughter (and all band kids) thrive in their environment and be able to do what they love.

If you’re in band for one year, six years, or for the rest of your life, Karen promises that you will get something positive out of your experience.

Happy Mother’s Day!
